I didn’t grow up simmering bones for hours. But after a hard fall that broke two teeth — and later discovering a hairline fracture in my upper jaw — I found myself craving more than just food. I needed nourishment that could heal, soothe, and comfort.
Bone broth became my answer.
Why Bone Broth?
Rich in collagen, minerals, and gut-loving goodness, bone broth supports joints, skin, digestion — and for me, it’s a slow medicine for healing a fractured jaw and fibromyalgia fatigue.
My Process (with love & some basics)
-
Roast: Preheat oven to 200°C. Roast beef shanks or marrow bones for 30-45 minutes, until golden and fragrant. This deepens flavor and unlocks minerals.
-
Pressure Cook: Transfer bones to pressure cooker. Add cold filtered water, 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp sea salt, peppercorns, parsley stems, frozen celery or carrot, and an optional parmesan rind. Cook for 90 minutes under pressure, then naturally release.
-
Strain & Cool: Pour broth through a fine sieve. Cool and refrigerate. A gelatinous top layer means you did it right!
Why Homemade is Better
Store-bought broths often contain preservatives, added flavorings, and less collagen. Making your own means knowing exactly what’s inside — plus the joy of slow cooking and honoring old food wisdom.
How I Use It
Sipping warm with lemon or herbs, cooking grains and noodles, making soothing soups with soft veggies, or stirring into mashed potatoes — bone broth is my daily healing companion.
This simple ritual connects me to my roots, to my body, and to the slow rhythms of care we all need.
